Leading the Way for Parent Voices in Nebraska

Omaha, NE – Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative (NECC) is proud to announce the launch of the fourth cohort of its Parent Ambassador Program. This year, 23 parents with diverse backgrounds – including family child care providers, teachers, caregivers, and adoptive and foster parents – have been selected to join the Parent Ambassador Class of 2025.

The Parent Ambassador Program equips parents with essential advocacy skills and connects them with policymakers, creating a vital bridge between decision-makers and those directly impacted by early childhood policies. Over the next year, these Ambassadors will deepen their understanding of the legislative process, establish connections with policymakers, and engage with local and statewide leaders in early childhood education.

“The Parent Ambassador Program was born to elevate parent and provider voices,” said Ilissa Talkington, NECC’s Parent Ambassador Program Manager. “Empowering parents and providers to share their stories, to feel confident sitting at decision making tables, and to pull up seats to tables where no seat has been offered has impacted Nebraska in a huge way.”

In October, the Class of 2025 gathered in Omaha for their inaugural conference, marking the start of a transformative year ahead. This cohort represents urban, suburban, and rural communities across Nebraska, including both native Nebraskans and newcomers from other states and countries who now call Nebraska home. For the first time, the group includes two fathers, reflecting NECC’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and representation of all caregivers.

Each Ambassador brings unique experiences and a shared commitment to improving Nebraska’s child care landscape. Talkington expressed her enthusiasm for this year’s group, noting, “Every year we say, ‘What a great group this will be,’ and each time we are inspired by the passion and insights they bring.”
